1. How do I complete the evaluation form for the webcast?

Typically after viewing a webcast we ask participants to complete a brief online evaluation form. The link to the evaluation form should be available in the webcast description section. Your evaluation results will be aggregated with those of others to assist in improvements and generalized reporting.


2. Where can I find the PowerPoint slides for the webcast?

Each Webcast will have general details provided about its purpose. These details are online in our Webcast section as well as on our partner ILRU project Webcast Schedule/Archive section. Within each Webcast description there may be Presentation Materials available (prior or and/or following) each Webcast. You may download these shared materials from our Webcast section.


3. Where can I find the webcast schedule?

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Autism Spectrum Disorders project Webcast calendar schedule is located in the Webcast section available from the Home page and/or Main Menu navigation.


4. Where can I find an archive of recent webcasts?

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Autism Spectrum Disorders project Webcasts are available from our Webcast section, linked from the Home page and/or Main Menu navigation.


5. What are the computer system requirements for viewing the webcast?

To view or listen to the webcast, you will need computer internet access and one of two plug-ins, RealPlayer® or Windows Media Player. Generally, you will be given a choice of which media player you want to use for the live broadcast. The archived Web casts are only available through RealPlayer Media Player. If you have other specific technical questions, visit the ILRU website


6. Who should I contact if I have technical difficulties viewing the webcast?

If you have technical difficulties during the webcast, please call ILRU at 713-520-0232 and dial 0 for the operator to ask for assistance. This number is both voice and TTY capable.


7. What are some basic facts and statistics about autism and ASD?

Incidence is the number of new cases identified over a period of time. The CDC's most recent report in 2007 indicates that 1 in 150 children have an ASD.
Prevalence is the number of individuals identified with a condition during a particular time period. The CDC's most recent report on the prevalence of ASD estimates that up to 560,000 individuals between the ages of 0 to 21 have an ASD.

8. Where can I find information about Asperger's?

An official US government source is the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke web site at http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/asperger/detail_asperger.htm. This site provides basic information regarding topics such as symptoms, causes, treatments, and research programs. In addition, links are provided to organizations focusing on Asperger's Syndrome. A general website for Asperger's Syndrome, http://www.aspergers.com, provides information and links specific to Asperger's Syndrome.


9. What are the employment rates among people with ASD?

A research study conducted by Cameto, Marder, Wagner & Cardoso in 2003 indicated that approximately 15 percent of individuals with ASD were employed. To our knowledge this research finding has not been updated. Although not specific to individuals with ASD, the U.S. Department of Labor is now calculating and issuing reports describing the unemployment rate of persons with disabilities. 10. Where can I find national or regional resource information on ASD?

A national source of information is http://www.nationalautismassociation.org. A list of resources by state is available at http://www.autism-pdd.net/resources-by-state.html.


11. How do I sign up for your e-newsletter mailing list?

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Autism Spectrum Disorders project email Newsletter Subscription Form: Thank you for your interest in the Vocational Rehabilitation Service Models for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. We concluded our work on September 30, 2013 and are not updating or supporting the Newsletter resources.

12. How do I learn more about NIDRR?

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) is a component of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services in the U.S. Department of Education. NIDRR has an extensive website that provides many details about the agency and its work. You can access this website at: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/osers/nidrr/index.html.


13. What are the best practices for helping persons with ASD obtain employment?

The new project, Vocational Rehabilitation Service Models for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, will be actively working with state vocational rehabilitation agencies to identify real-world examples of best practices.


14. How will your project determine VR best practices for serving consumers with ASD?

The project, as a part of its R.3 work, will be identifying best practices in supporting employment outcomes for individuals with ASD. The project will be doing this through a five-step process that can be described in the following manner:

Step 1: Solicit nominations from state directors of vocational rehabilitation services of their vendors providing what are perceived to be effective employment placement services for individuals with ASD.
Step 2: Project staff contact nominated vendors for information about their practices and outcomes.
Step 3: Summaries are prepared for anonymous review and selection by members of the project's national advisory panel.
Step 4: Best practice examples are described in detail by project staff and selected vendors involved are notified.
Step 5: Information about identified best practices are uploaded to the project's website. Other venues for sharing best practice information are identified and pursued.

15. Is there a state-by-state comparison of VR programs or model programs for review?

Over time the project will identify best practice models that are representative of what is "on the ground" now. It is not the intention for these practices to be compared across states.

The project will also be collecting information from state directors of vocational rehabilitation services about specialty counselors (or lead counselors) dealing with individuals with ASD who are interested in seeking vocational rehabilitation service supports. This list will have contacts for each state and will facilitate inquiries that consumers and their families may initiate.


16. Where can I find articles and references on ASD and employment-related issues?

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Autism Spectrum Disorders project is developing a reference library of resources and reference articles related to ASD and employment.


17. How will you disseminate the findings from your research project?

The Vocational Rehabilitation and Autism Spectrum Disorders project will create print and electronic resources to disseminate information to VR counselors, VR administrators, and consumers with ASD and their families. To stay informed, sign up for our VR Autism e-newsletter. Other channels for dissemination include:
